Crypt
A single chamber within a mausoleum that holds one casket. The above-ground equivalent of a grave.
A crypt is the individual sealed space a casket is entombed in inside a mausoleum. Crypts are priced by location within the building — eye-level “heart level” crypts cost more than those near the floor or high up. Couples sometimes buy companion crypts side by side or a double-depth crypt.
The price covers the space; expect separate charges for opening and closing the crypt and for engraving the granite or marble front.
- Mausoleum— An above-ground building that holds caskets in sealed chambers called crypts. An alternative to in-ground burial.
- Interment— The act of placing remains in their final resting place — burial in the ground, or placement in a crypt or niche. Placing cremated remains specifically is called inurnment.
