Pallbearer

One of the people who carry or escort the casket. Usually six, given the weight. Honorary pallbearers walk alongside without lifting.

Pallbearers carry the casket from the service to the hearse and to the graveside. Because a casket with a body can weigh several hundred pounds, there are typically six, chosen from close friends and family as a mark of honor. Funeral homes can also provide staff to carry if the family prefers.

Honorary pallbearers are named to recognize a relationship but do not physically carry the casket — useful for those who are older, frail, or simply many. There is no rule about gender or number.
